LAD #21: Canegie's Gospel of Wealth
During the time period at hand, there was very so-so administration of money which was resulting in the growing gap between the rich and the poor. The rich got richer while the poor only got poorer. There was also some art and literature created during this time but mostly people were focusing on getting rich. Everybody wanted to be in the upper crust. When it came to the issue of wealthy parents having to leave their fortunes for their under aged children the benefits are few. The child is most likely not prepared to take on the burden of the cash and society sees the money wasted. It was also true that the more you taxed the rich the more of the money flowed back into society itself and one mans extreme wealth can in turn help to distribute something to everyone in the community. The idea was that the wealthy need to share with the un-wealthy, in order to have a more balanced and well rounded society.

LAD #20 Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation 1863:
The Emancipation Proclamation was a huge movement when it came to slavery in the south. It declared that slaves who fought with the Union during the Civil War were free forever. Freedom, when fighting for freedom. The government promised to protect there rights as real American citizens and those who try and violate them will have to deal with the legal consequences. This applied to all states that were not only nutural but also in the rebellious states as well. Many slaves chose to fight in the Civil War because of this.

LAD #19 Lincolns Second Inaugural Address:

Lincoln starts out his second address with talking about the very serious current issues such as the secession and the constant fight with slavery. It was hard because things hadn't really gotten better and its believed that the one reason Lincoln won the election was due to the fact he had recently won a battle against the confederacy. The Union was still broken and crumbling and neither side wanted war. Lincoln wouldn't take the breaking apart as acceptable and looked at it as if the biggest thing to do was to keep the states together. United or die. He and everyone else never imagined that it could possibly escalate to the height it did. Innocent Americans dying on either side was not what they wanted. None the less Lincoln believes god has his own plan for the war, and what happens is now up to him. He wanted most of all after reuniting, to heal the nations wounds and to bring it back together as one whole unit. Abraham Lincoln wanted to bring care and love back into the Union, and bring us all together while we did that.

LAD #18 Dred Scott Decision:
Dred Scott versus. Sanford case which took place in Feburary of 1857 was a very important case especially when it came to the hotly debated topic of slavery. The head of the supreme justice at the time of Rodger B. Taney and the topic of the case was mainly whether or not the accussed was free or not. This was during the time when slavery was so contriversal the nation was almost completely devided. The ruling was not one anyone had predicted as the judge claimed he couldnt even sue because he wasnt even a citizen. Not only that but he was considered property, and of corse property couldnt sue either. A heartbreaking blow to the abolitionist parties. He also stated that Congress had zero right to abolish slavery within the states. Unfortunitly this also made the point that slaves couldnt be taken from thier owners and leading into the fact that runaway slaves had to be retunred.

Sojourners Truths 'Aint I a Woman' Speech 1851:

Sojourners point throughout her speech was to talk about how whites and blacks are treated so differently. She talks about personal experience as she herself is a woman, but she is treated so poorly. She has been whipped, and beaten. Shes mothered 13 children most of which became slaves. Whereas the white woman is a delicate little tea cake that is treated with the utmost kindness and respect. Where is the equality? Another point she makes is that she finds herself in need of education. And if she is less smart then a white man as they claim, shouldn't she be taught in order to be equally if not as smart as men? She finishes by saying it is women's turn to take over the world and make things right again. Feminist power at its finest.

Frederick Douglas Fifth of July Speech:

Frederick was a speaker at the 4th of July celebration in Corinthian Hall in Rochester NY. It was odd because he gave his speech a day later, and he brings up the question of how does the fourth of the July really represent freedom to a slave that doesn't have it? He doesn't find the celebration to be heartfelt because thousands of blacks live in American without any freedom at all. He even goes to say its a worse day then usual for the African American population. What is his point? Slavery is vile and cruel and we as Americans are selfish and ignorant if we can celebrate freedom when we don't even support it.

Lincolns Gettysburg Address:

From the beginning of his presidency Lincoln was adement on making sure the Union was to be preserved. Unfortunately for him is of course fell apart with the secession of certain states. But he refuses to give up and reveals how he intends to renite the nation once more. He of course wants freedom and equality for all people in America and sides with the North in order to ablosh slavery and protect the rights of thousands. Lincoln never wants us to forget the war, how it started, why is happened, and what our men died for. He knows that the fate of America does not lie with him, but with the people. Why should good American men die for nothing? Be the good in America. He wanted to ensure that all the lives that were lost weren't just meaningless people fighting a war. But heroes fighting for freedom.

Lincolns Inaugural Address:

The issue over slavery has become a increasingly painful so Lincoln starts out by addressing it instantly. His main concern appears to be conserving the Union so he announces he is not going to remove slavery from the South. He also talks about how runaway slaves are technically their owners even after they have runaway. Meaning they can be returned to slavery at any time. Lincoln believes that although the issues of slavery are very severe, they are not going anywhere. He understands how dangerous and unfortunite things could become but he says the key to success is the unity of the states. United States of America. We cannot be enemies if we want to succeed.

John Calhoun's 1850 Speech:

This speech (indirectly given by John Calhoun) was a debate on the hot topic of slavery. Tension occured between states but mainly there appeared a line between the North and the South. The Souths economy was based on slavery, and it was an important aspect of their lives. The North had to need for slaves and found the imprisoning or owning of slaves was very wrong. Also, parties were forming and they too were drawing lines. Not only were the topics of slavery seemingly between North and South, so were the political parties. The Whigs represented the Northerners and the Democrats mostly West and South. Calhouns main concern was for the Union and hoping that it would survive. He wanted to find a solution that would benefit everyone. Calhoun offers the solution of settling and attending to the South needs in order to avoid/postpone cessession.

Polk's War:
John Slidell, was sent to Mexico to calm relations between countries but was rejected. This resulted in America invading Mexico and loosing lives. Slidell was positive that the Mexican government would come to its senses. He was turned away from the government and a revolution took place. The government became military based but they still didn't accept him. They refused to talk to Americans. American forces were being assembled to invade Mexico (as they already had Texas). Troops were told to invade but not aggressively, this is not go over well as some were still killed. Polk argued that America declared war because Mexico was no longer useful as a separate country and peace was non-existent. So the Mexicans declared war on America officially and it was done.

The Seneca Falls Declaration:
Woman's rights movements really kicked off when the Seneca Falls Declaration took place. It was a decisively big step for the activists of the time. This Declaration talked about all the grievances as the time and how women deserved to be equal as equals.  It talks about womans role in society and their current role in life today. In it, it also mentions how woman are treated as property; a degrading untrue fact of the day. All in all it spoke out about the rights, freedoms, and unhappiness of women everywhere.

Monroe Doctrine

Presented by James Monroe the Doctrine was a speech given to the United States Congress. It was proposed for the sake of national security, and they didn't want to risk having any other superpower take over again. It was designed to separate the old world from the new world. The idea was to stop Europe from colonizing the new countries in Latin America. The United States feared that the colonozation so close to home would pose a threat to the Americans. It was also a way of saying that the european countries really needed to mind their own business. The Doctrine also helped to make ties with Great Britain, some would call a 'special relationship'. Britain decided to help which was necessary because the US could not fight it alone. The Doctrine lasted a very long time and its effect was great.

LAD #9

Thomas Jefferson's First Inaugural Address:
Thomas Jefferson starts out his Address by giving a thank you to everyone who helped him, and then he begins to discuss the nation he now leads. He describes America as a "rising nation" and talks about its rapid growth and beauty as a country. He mentions the constitution and how it will help to guide us through the "troubled world" we find ourselves in.
He then continues to touch on common good and the freedom of speech within the Constitution. Now, he then goes on to point out the importance of protecting not only the majority, but indeed the minority as well. That although we wish to benefit the most people, we simply cannot forget the others that fall under the umbrella of less voiced groups. He talks about protecting everyone.
It shouldn't surprise us that he then goes on to discuss the pursuit of happiness. How it is truly achieved in this day and age.
Jefferson doesn't stop there, as he states again the freedoms of the people. " freedom of religion; freedom of the press, and freedom of person" he says, and he says that with these things we can find the road that leads to 'peace, liberty, and safety'.
He finishes off by saying he is forever grateful and prepared for the position he has been given. and he wishes only for happiness and freedom for every single American citizen. Ending with the very powerful "And may that Infinite Power which rules the destinies of the universe lead our councils to what is best, and give them a favorable issue for your peace and prosperity.". What wonderful speaker.

Columbus Blog #8

When were little we are taught that Christopher Columbus is the great discoverer of the Americas - but was he truly all we built him up to be? When he was exploring in the Americas he often talked about how the Indians would make good slaves, stating that they could never be equals. He was one to enslave innocent people of the Indian cultures. Why was this? Columbus didn't like the different cultures and powers, and is solution was enslaving them all. And along with imposing slavery upon the Indians Columbus found himself in a great amount of debt due to his borrowing of money for the adventures. He demanded that they pull together all the money he needed or they be killed. When Columbus and his mean first saw land, it was not Columbus who actually saw the first but someone else on the ship. But of course, he had to have the glory for himself. So he claimed he had seen the land far before the man and took the title. Clearly. This is no nice childhood hero.

"LAD #6: Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality" and "LAD #7: Washington's Farewell Address."

LAD #6
The proclamation was an announcement made by the United States (George Washington at the time), which basically claimed the states to be neutral when it came to the conflict going on between France and Great Britain. It said that Americas could not help or aid either country int he war as well.

LAD #7
The address was written by Washington (first president of the United States) after 45 years of his service. It was written to the people about his decline and all in all his presidency. He talked about all the great things that had happened, and the issues America faced. He was originally going to write it after his first term, but after being re-elected and heading so many things, he decided to stay on till the end of his third term in office.

Republican Motherhood Blog

1.       Within the Revolution a new outlook on woman had arose. They were now dubbed responsible for raising the children of the every bright America. As stated in Doc A, "Lt is the "nursery of the future man and of the undying spirit"; and is woman is the nurse and educator.
2.   There were quite a few downfalls to the Republican Motherhood. The main thing being that the understanding was that woman did not have a place outside of the home. It was projected that their were no other options. As boldly put in Doc D, "If she makes that delightful and salutary-the adobe of order and purity, though she may never leave the threshold"
3.      Well as mentioned in Doc D, "her province to adorn social life" shows that woman were expected to be very social within their home society. Now in the modern day life you still see suburban house parties or book clubs between the housewives of today.

    1. The setting is
    2.      The son is at the center of the picture which indicates his importance, and this painting proves to be republican as the woman is the sole care-giver their, caring for her son.
    3.      He son is very young and bold, looks to be bold and bright-eyed.
    4.      Her arm is supporting her son, which could symbolize how the woman cares for and supports her children.

LAD: Federalist #10

1. Why are factions so difficult to eliminate?
In order to remove a faction, you would need to either take away a liberty or give all the people the same opinion. Since the later is imposable and the previous is rather disliked they pose a difficult problem when it comes to elimination.

2. If factions cannot be removed then how can they be controlled?
Their are several ways  to control the effects of factions. If the faction is for the minority, you need to ensure that the majority do not all share the same interest against the faction, or else you are at risk for oppression. People can argue that if the faction does not benefit the most people, then it is unnecessary. But this is untrue for their are some groups of people who  require certain rights, even though those rights are not tied in to 'the majority'. If you have a majority benefitting from the faction, you need to ensure that their is to be not bitterness from the minority. As you can see, thier is no 'black and white' answer.

Blog #4 - Revolution Article

[1] More Americans died during the Civil War then they did in any other war, including the World Wars I and II.
[2] Even though more people died in the Civil War, a much greater percent of the population of colonists died in the Revolutionary War.
[3] The most well known paintings of the Revolutionary War were not always accurate, and they also never portrayed actual battle scenes. Whereas when the Civil war was taking place, cameras has just come to be so gruesome battle scenes wee easily portrayed.
[4] Soldiers in the Revolutionary War had far worse weapons, so they actually fought mostly close range, bayonet charges and hand to hand combat was actually common.
[5] During a harsh winter in the Revolutionary War, not only the British soldiers but the American soldiers ran out of food and lost many to starvation or freezing.

LAD #3: Declaration of Independence

[1] Democratic Principles: The idea that all men are equal and should therefore have equal rights. This in turn went on to how everyone should have an equal say, and equal vote. In the past the rich had always held all the power and they did not want that to be the case. Freedom and equality was the memo for the Declaration. In all, they wanted what was best fir the people.

[2] Grievances: Their grievances talked about how the King did not think for the good of the majority. They listed off things that they found were unjust, such as "cutting off our trade with all parts of the world", "For imposing taxes on us without our consent" and a very important one, "For depriving us, in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury". Something they found to be extremely unjust.

[3] Conclusion: They Declaration finishes off by stating that the King had not listened to their problems, and that they (the Americans) were not British, but that of the later. American. The direct quote it "A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people". Announcing in fact that the King can no longer rule over them, they are claiming Independence. Finally, they pronounce themselves as "free and independent states", and remove themselves from the crown.

LAD #2: John Peter Zenger

[1] Zenger was a newspaper publisher in New York for the New York Weekly Journal. He often wrote opposing viewpoints and gossip.

[2] Zenger was charged with 'seditious libel' after his journal continued to post bashing articles about the royal governor. His claim was, that even though what was being said wasn't good, it was true. And this cemented the idea of freedom of press for the future.

[3] After the trial their was now freedom of press, and people were able to write about whatever they wanted. If you think about it, so much of what people write about other people in articles, newspapers, ect., are things those person doesn't want being said. But because of freedom of press, people of the rights to write it anyways. Thus changing the world of American press forever.
[4] The significance of this trial is great for many reasons. The biggest one is this opened up more freedom and rights for the people. It also paved the way for more free speech and press (see # 3)

Mayflower Compact & Fundamental Orders of CT, PHOTOS

The picture below is a copy of the origanol Mayflower Compact (1620).

This picture below is a paiting of what the creaters of the Fundamental Order of CT (1639) may have looked like while they created the document.

Mayflower Compact & Fundamental Orders of CT

[1] The main concept within the Mayflower Compact was creating the first colony in Virginia. It also talks about (on many occasions) the grace of god and the Christian faith. Another concept is that all the laws, acts, ect., 'shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general Good of the Colony'

[2] It reflects the 'Old World' in the sense that everything is being done in the word of god and for the king, but also reflects the 'New World' as they mention the focus is for the good of the colony (not the good of the king or main power).

[3] The two documents prove very different. Whereas in the M. C. there are the same ideas as in the Fundamental Order of CT, but with in the Order everything is played out and very specific. Within the Order, they took the ideas of the M. C. and wrote it out into a constitution clear as day.

[4] Connecticut wanted to be able to be one with the Public State or Commonwealth. They wish to 'maintain and preserve the liberty' and also to keep the gospel of Jesus alive and well.

[5] You see many times over and over within the Order of CT the determination for not having a certain person or group maintain all the power. It is clear that they desire to have the power with the people. For example, of rule is "that no person be chosen Governor above once in two years" thus ensuring one person cannot maintain power for an elongated period of time. Even for the people who have power, they are still ruled with the people. Another example is "that the deputies thus chosen shall have power and liberty to appoint atime and a place of meeting together before any General Court, to advise and consult of all such things as may concern the good of the public".
